Giving Thanks Together

It was a real joy to watch Year 6 children lead our time of harvest thanksgiving worship. Tshilidzi, Tunmishe, Ellie, Fleur, Caitlin and Charlotte led us through a simple liturgy enabling us to prepare our minds and hearts, confess our wrongdoing, praise, give thanks and sing.

Some of you have asked for the text of the service, and I have attached it below. The link to the moving video from Tear Fund is here. The scripture we used is from 2 Samuel 23 v 13 and following:

During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord. “Far be it from me, Lord, to do this!” he said. “Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?” And David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.

Harvest Festival 2014

Good Morning boys and girls, staff and parents, and welcome to our Harvest Festival for 2014. We are going to lead this service of thanksgiving, and we would love it if you joined in when we asked you to!

We are going to open our time of worship with a song:

  • Harvest Hymn (Give Thanks)

God of the harvest, we thank you and praise you for your creating and loving power.  Give us understanding to see how you are at work in our lives. Help us to taste the goodness that comes from knowing you.

We are going to say sorry for some things we have done wrong, and some things we have forgotten to do:

We are sorry that we forget that you provide all the food that we eat.

We are sorry that we forget that millions of people do not have enough to eat and drink.

And we are sorry that we waste food because it is not exactly what we want.

     Amen.

We are going to join in together with another song:

  • Thank you for almost everything

Please join together with us to give thanks. When we say “We bring our thanks, good Lord” please reply with “your mercy endures forever”.

Let us give thanks to God, the God of all the peoples of the earth. For the beautiful colours and shapes of nature, we bring our thanks, Good Lord.

All: Your Mercy Endures for Ever

For our daily food, and for those whose work and skill produce it for us, we bring our thanks, good Lord

All: Your Mercy Endures for Ever

For ideas, and learning and knowledge, which bring help to people in their need, we bring our thanks, good Lord.

All: Your Mercy Endures for Ever

For the changing seasons, and the new life that comes with each year, we bring our thanks good Lord.

All: Your Mercy Endures for Ever

For hope and encouragement that comes when we work together, we bring our thanks, good Lord.

All: Your Mercy  Endures for Ever

For people in whose lives we see goodness, kindness, patience and all the fruits of the Spirit, we bring our thanks, good Lord.

All: Your Mercy Endures for Ever

For the life we have been given, and for all those whom you have given us to share it with, we bring our thanks, good Lord.

All: Your Mercy Endures for Ever

We will sing one of our favourites, now, Harvest Samba:

  • Harvest Samba

We are now going to watch a film, and Mr Humphreys will talk to us about it.

We are going to bring the needs of the world to God now. Please join us in prayer:

Father, we thank you for the work of Tear Fund, and pray that they would have strength and success in bringing fresh water to the villages of Uganda who need it for drink and for farming.

We thank you too for the work of the Food Bank in Milton Keynes, and ask that you would help them to get rid of poverty and need in our town.

Amen.

We join together in singing the prayer that Jesus taught us:

  • Our Father in Heaven

We invite you to join us in offering our work and service to God on behalf of the poor:

There is a huge variety of seeds and each seed produces a different crop. Each of us is different, and God wants us to grow as people so that our lives are good and wholesome and a blessing to others.

Help us to care for the world you created.

May we live so as to bring life and hope to others.

Help us to be more and more like the people you created us to be.

We are now going to sing our last song:

  • Harvest Song (There is a farmer)

Thank you all for coming to our harvest thanksgiving. There is a retiring collection for the work of Tear Fund in Uganda. We will finish by saying the grace to each other:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all, evermore, Amen.
